Describe the structure of a spermatoz
What will be an ideal response?
A spermatozoon contains three distinct regions: a head, middle piece, and tail. The head is a flattened oval containing densely packed chromosomes with a tip containing an acrosomal cap, a membranous compartment containing enzymes involved in fertilization. The head is attached to the middle piece by a short neck. The neck contains both the centrioles of the original spermatid. The microtubules of the distal centriole are continuous with those of the middle piece and the tail. Mitochondria arranged spirally around the microtubules provide the energy needed to move the tail. The tail is the only example of a flagellum in the human body, and moves the cell from one place to another in a complex corkscrew motion.
