Control of those territories guaranteed them access to vital resources such as iron and silver, as well as promised taxes and tribute. The Assyrians defeated each of their rival kingdoms and peoples and established a large and diverse empire. Its effect was largely to bring wealth to the imperial core while plundering the vanquished periphery.
