Give an example of probation. Then give an example of parole.
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. The following is an example of probation. A person is convicted of vandalizing a school. Instead of sentencing this person to serve time in prison, he or she is told to perform a community service for 3 months, which involves cleaning duties at the school. The person will be supervised during this time to make sure he or she is performing the terms of the probation. The following is an example of parole. A person is sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbing a bank. However, because of good behavior, his or her time in prison is reduced to 7 years. After release, the person is placed on parole, which allows him or her to return to society under the strict supervision of a parole officer. The offender has to meet certain conditions while on parole, such as adhering to a curfew and passing periodic drug tests.
