Proponents of restorative justice argue that the victim, community, and offender should be able to participate in rebuilding the relationship that was damaged as a result of the crime. Identify and describe the three approaches that attempt to achieve this goal.
What will be an ideal response?
1.) Victim-offender mediation is the most common type of restorative program. Offenders and victims meet with volunteer mediators to discuss the effects of the crime on their lives, express their concerns and feelings, and work out a restitution agreement.
2.) Family group conferencing is based on the same rationales as victim-offender mediation with two main differences. Conferencing involves a broader range of participants (family, friends, coworkers, etc) who take collective responsibility for the offender and for carrying out his or her agreement. The other difference is that conferencing often reles on police, probation, or social service agencies for organization and facilitation.
3.) Reparative probation and other citizen boards where the offender and volunteer citizen members work together to draw up a contract, based on restorative principles, which the offender agrees to carry out.
