How might teacher habitudes and the variances in acculturation among diverse families influence how teachers begin to understand individual families and develop relationships with them? Be sure to define teacher habitudes and acculturation in your response.
What will be an ideal response?
It is important to understand individual differences, as well as cultural beliefs, of each family in order to build relationships with the family members. Teacher habitudes are the unexamined attitudes or preconceptions of cultural traits teachers have, and these habitudes may be inaccurate for the actual families teachers are working with. Habitudes along with varying levels of acculturation may lead teachers to expect the members of a family to act a certain way because of their race, ethnicity, or language. Acculturation describes the degree to which people from a certain cultural group display the beliefs and practices of that group. Families adopt cultural practices to varying degrees based on factors such as education level, socioeconomic status, and the amount of time spent in the culture or removed from it, including the age of emigration from the native country, the amount of contact with people from other cultures, and urban or rural origin. Therefore, it is important for teachers not to expect the members of a family to act a certain way because of their race, ethnicity, or language. It is important to understand individual differences, as well as cultural beliefs.
