Differentiate between stimulants, depressants, opiates, and hallucinogens, and give at least two examples of each. Among the drugs that you listed, identify the one you think is the most dangerous in terms of physical harm, drug dependence, and social harm, and explain why.

Depressants are drugs that slow down the normal functions of the CNS. They are used to reduce anxiety, aid in sleep, enhance relaxation, and lower inhibitions. These are tranquilizers, sedatives, alcohol, and inhalants. Opiates are narcotics that lead to feelings of euphoria, followed by extreme relaxation. Opiates activate pleasure centers in the brain and interfere with the brain's ability to recognize pain signals. These are usually prescribed in hospital settings to deal with pain, but they are highly addictive. This classification of drugs includes heroin and oxycodone. Stimulants are drugs that increase the activity of the nervous system, leading to increased energy and a sense of euphoria. These drugs are highly addictive and include caffeine, cocaine, ephedra, amphetamines, and methamphetamines. Hallucinogens are psychoactive drugs, meaning that people experience changes in perception and mood. People may have visual illusions or experience confusion in the form of perceptual and time distortions. They may also be suspicious and have violent behavior and anxiety. High doses of these drugs can lead to seizures, coma, and/or death.
The two drugs students choose in each category will vary. In identifying which drug is the most dangerous and why, the answer should include information about physical harm, drug dependence, and social harm.
