Compression rings are forced against the cylinder wall by combustion pressure at the top and back of the ring. What is the purpose of the second ring?
What will be an ideal response?
The second ring operates under considerably less pressure than the top ring: 35,000 psi at 300F. It captures the little amount of pressure that escapes past the top ring and also scrapes any oil that leaks upward beyond the oil ring back down the cylinder for a second chance at oil control.
