Explain the difference between academic achievement and intelligence as it pertains to a student with a hearing loss.
Answers may vary but should include the following points as described on page 296 of the textbook: Students who are deaf and hard of hearing have problems with all academic areas because our schooling system is language based, and students who are deaf and hard of hearing have difficulty with language. Academic performance should not be equated with intelligence. Deafness itself, however, has no impact on intelligence. Students who are deaf are no less intelligent simply because they are deaf. The lack of achievement is usually not due to lack of intelligence but to the inadequate development of a first language and the mismatch between the demands of spoken and written English and the student's ability to understand and communicate in English.
