What was Hitler's two-stage approach to conquering Europe, and where did he fail most significantly?
What will be an ideal response?
Using the blitzkrieg to rapidly invade and seize Belgium, France, Norway, Holland, and Denmark, Hitler then began to engage in the Battle of Britain in 1940 to gain control of western Europe. In the East, he had formed alliances with Bulgaria, Romania, and other buffer states that he hoped would give him a basis as he fought against the Soviet Union; he wanted their assistance to prevent the conflict from being a devastating two-front war. He was mistaken, however, and did end up fighting a two-front war. Because Hitler had to send troops into the Mediterranean to fight those dispatched by Churchill, he had a significant delay in launching his attack on Russia, and thus, like Napoleon, ended up getting to Russia just in time for winter. This delay cost Hitler dearly when he got bogged down in the Russian winter, losing significant numbers of troops, and fighting a costly two-front war.
