What was the role of women in World War I?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Women did not participate directly on the World War I battlefield, with the possible exception of Russia's "Women's Battalion of Death," which was also designed to shame reluctant male soldiers. The British organized auxiliary units, such as the WAACs (Women's Army Auxiliary Corps) and Wrens (British Women's Royal Naval Service), which carried out office work and served as nurses. In Germany, the military command established the "Women's Home Army" to boost morale and root out spies. Women at home were encouraged to buy war bonds; some produced gas masks at home, and others took jobs that had previously been the exclusive province of men, such as postal carrier and bus conductor.
