Among defendants charged with aggravated assault, case-processing outcomes for domestic violence were the same as or more serious than the outcomes for non-domestic violence cases. Domestic violence defendants were slightly more likely to be convicted and given longer sentences than non-domestic violence defendants. The study also found that domestic violence aggravated assault defendants were less likely to be granted pretrial release than non-domestic violence aggravated assault defendants. About 15% of the domestic violence sexual assault defendants received sentences longer than 10 years, whereas none of the non-domestic violence sexual assault defendants had a sentence that long.
