What is a sensorineural hearing loss? Give an example

What will be an ideal response?

A sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the cochlea or any of the pathways from the cochlea to the acoustic nerve and the brain. A sensorineural hearing loss can be congenital, or the child is born with the problem, or it can be acquired. In children, acquired sensorineural hearing loss can result from viral diseases or bacterial infections. In adults, acquired sensorineural hearing loss can be due to aging, or presbycusis. Another form could be through exposure to noise.
Acoustic neuroma can occur, which is a tumor that grows near the acoustic nerve.
Also, medications can cause hearing loss; this is known as ototoxicity.
