Why is the mass media considered an emerging social institution?
What will be an ideal response?
The other social institutions (family, religion, education, medicine, politics, economics, law, science, and the military) have existed since the establishment of society. Even in hunting and gathering societies, early versions of these institutions made group living possible, even if they were primitive forms. The technology did not exist for mass media in early societies, nor was there actually a need for "mass" media. It was not until cities were developed and societies grew in population that mass media became a necessity. Movable type was not invented until the early 1400s, followed by the steam-powered printing press some 300 years later. This gives the other social institutions about a 50,000-year advantage in terms of inception.
