Bangladesh's precarious situation, prone to seasonal flooding from seasonal cyclonic storms and monsoon rains. Adding to this issue, most of the population lives within the floodplain.. While forests and woodlands once covered most of South Asia, they have vanished as a result of human activities–agriculture, urban and industrial expansion as well as railroad construction. This results in a shortage of fuelwood meaning many must use dung as an energy source, or they must travel long distances to collect available wood. Wildlife is also threatened with extinction as a result of deforestation; efforts are considerable to protect wildlife, particularly the tiger. Additionally soil salinization resulting from years of irrigated agriculture in the Indus Valley of Pakistan has left much of the land infertile.
