Distinguish between social networks and social support, noting how physical activity can be impacted
The terms "social networks" and "social support" are sometimes used interchangeably. However, the term "social networks" refers to the social structure composed of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes," which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange, dislike, or intimate relationships or relationships involving specific beliefs, knowledge, or prestige that consider the number or frequency of contacts with family members, relatives, friends, and colleagues.
In contrast, social support and relationships are sub-concepts of social networks. Social support is a social network function (as it provides aid and assistance) given by members in a social network. The provision of social support is an important function of social relationships. Social support can encourage individuals to initiate and maintain physical activity through psychological mechanisms such as motivation and self-efficacy and by providing tangible resources such as access to information that can help individuals achieve better health.
