Cai Guo-Qiang has used gunpowder in many of his works . He uses this medium, which was originally used for destruction, to create art. In addition, in his Project to Extend the Great Wall of China sought to use something meant to divide people as a way to unite them. In this way, Cai was the logical choice for the Olympics given the grand spectacles associated with his artistic medium and for his vision of uniting different nations through his work.
