Explain the impeachment process via which judges may be removed from office.
What will be an ideal response?
- Appointed under Article II of the U.S. Constitution, federal judges can be removed from office only if found guilty of "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors."- Before a federal judge can be impeached, the U.S. House of Representatives must be presented with specific charges of misconduct and vote on whether these charges merit further action.- If the House votes to impeach by a simple majority (more than 50 percent), the U.S. Senate-presided over by the chief justice of the United States Supreme Court-holds a trial on the judge's conduct. At the conclusion of this trial, a two-thirds majority vote is required in the Senate to remove the judge.
