What are the main advantages and disadvantages of hand- and mechanical harvesting?
What will be an ideal response?
Hand harvesting
• Advantages: Fruits and vegetables can be selectively harvested, which reduces the
number of low-quality products and debris harvested, thereby saving time cleaning
and sorting after harvesting; in some cases, it is the only choice because machines
for harvesting a particular crop are not available.
• Disadvantages: It is labor intensive, expensive, and slow.
Mechanized harvesting
• Advantages It is faster than hand harvesting, and many acres can be harvested very
rapidly, thereby getting the commodity out of the field and cooled in a quick and
efficient manner.
• Disadvantages: Machines are expensive in their initial cost and upkeep, products
harvested mechanically are more likely to be damaged, and poor-quality products
and debris are indiscriminately harvested, which requires cleaning and sorting of
seeds.
