How are the sexual responses of males and females to erotic stimuli measured?
What will be an ideal response?
Objective measures of physiological arousal in men and women can be obtained through two instruments: a penile strain gauge and a photoplethysmograph. The penile strain gauge is used to get a physiological measure of arousal in the male; it is a flexible loop that fits around the base of the penis. The photoplethysmograph, or photometer, measures physiological arousal in the female; it is an acrylic cylinder that is placed just inside the entrance to the vagina. Both instruments measure vasocongestion in the genitals, which is the major physiological response during sexual arousal.
