Even though the cooling wire (usually the "Y" wire) runs from the thermostat to the air handler, it actually just continues on to the condensing unit. Why isn't the cooling wire run directly from the thermostat to the condensing unit?

If this was done, a third set of wires would need to be run. (Thermostat to condensing unit, thermostat to air handler, air handler to condensing unit) By using the air handler as the "junction box," only two sets of wires need to be run and all low voltage troubleshooting can be performed at the air handler.
