The student should indicate that the family provides certain functions to create stability in society as well as functions to maintain itself. The three primary founders are 1. provide an ongoing supply of new members, 2. economic support, and 3. emotional support. Within the family there are functional roles that men (instrumental) and women (expressive) fulfill.
