Harmony – a sequence of tones that enriches a melody and makes the sounds blend. Harmony is often created by using chords—several notes played together at the same time. Example: Have children explore tonal instruments and identify sound combinations they like.
Mood – the way a particular combination of music elements affects the
listener. Example: Have children paint as they listen to different styles of music.
Tempo – the speed at which a rhythm or musical piece is played. Example:
Have children sing the same song slowly, then faster and faster.
Pitch – the highness or lowness of a sound. Example: Collect sound makers and instruments and have children try to match them by pitch.
Timbre – the unique quality of a sound. Example: Play a hidden instrument and have children try to guess which instrument it is.
