Explain why people who have received an HIV positive test result do not seek treatment
There are many reasons some individuals who have received an HIV positive test result do not go for care. One of the most important reasons is HIV-related stigma, due to which individuals may feel socially excluded and ashamed to be HIV positive, feel stigmatized about having HIV, or fear that others may find out that they are HIV positive. These individuals have been known to delay care (Pollini et al., 2011). HIV-related stigma comes from deeply rooted negative feelings that many societies have against particular groups or behaviors. Other issues that complicate stopping HIV transmission include denial about being HIV positive and concern that one may not be able to afford treatment. Although HIV-related stigma and concerns about being able to afford care are very real, most countries, including the United States, have made enormous strides in making health care and treatment available to those who need it. Importantly, one of the most critical times to get an HIV-positive person into care is at the time they are diagnosed. Research shows that when you offer to help a newly positive person make an appointment for care or are able to go with them to their appointment, they will be much more likely to engage in their HIV care (Gilman et al., 2012). ?
