Identify and discuss the two different explanations for repeat victimization. Give an example of each explanation.
What will be an ideal response?
Repeat victimization occurs when the same victimization happens more than once to the same individual, household, place, business, vehicle, or other target. There are two reasons for repeat victimization. One is the boost explanation and the other is the flag explanation. The boost explanation states that an offender gains important knowledge about the target by successfully performing the initial offense. Example, a burglar who enters a victim’s residence could identify the location of valuable items in a house. The flag explanation focuses on the vulnerabilities of the victims and locations. Example, college students are known to be more vulnerable than others because of their risky and careless behaviors by posting their schedules online or day-to-day routines.
