Identify and explain the basic processes of the cognitive perspective of psychological disorders. Provide an example.
What will be an ideal response?
The process originates with dysfunctional attitudes, which are negative beliefs about the self that are also deeply ingrained and difficult to articulate. Without even realizing it people with psychological disorders experience automatic thoughts the product of dysfunctional attitudes that are so deeply entrenched the individual is not even aware that they exist. Dysfunctional attitudes influence the ways that people with psychological disorders interpret their experiences. An example of the process would show how a dysfunctional attitude about making a mistake can lead the individual to interpret the experience of giving the wrong answer in class as the basis for drawing the automatic (but incorrect) conclusion that people believe that they're "stupid," the negative emotion that arises from the incorrect thought.
