The leaders were well known, charismatic and respected. The companies and many of the executives were very generous in the community. There was creative accounting employed at all the companies (at MiniScribe it was physical) and at the others there were more sophisticated manipulations. Also, the officers and employees were all committed to reaching certain goals related to share price, EPS, or revenues. And many employees were fearful.
