Research on HIV vaccines is progressing, but success to date has been limited to vaccines that are of

limited effectiveness against a few strains of the HIV virus. However, flu vaccines are similar in their
limitations. Why are ‘limited effectiveness’ flu vaccines released, but not HIV vaccines? What will be an ideal response?


There are two reasons. First, certain strains of flu tend to be more common in certain areas at certain
times, and this can be predicted to some level. Therefore the medical community can release the
vaccines more effectively. Second, and more important, contracting the flu is difficult to prevent
during regular activity and social interaction. To date, no effective vaccines have been developed.
The most effective preventative to date is education on safe sex practices.
