Discuss the characteristics and formation of greenstone belts. Why are these rocks important in
explaining the early Earth history? What will be an ideal response?
Greenstone belts are composed of mafic and ultramafic pillow lavas overlain by sedimentary
rocks. These rocks are intruded by granitic magma and cut by thrust faults. These belts seem to
indicate that the process of plate tectonics was active in the early history of the Earth.
