Sinkholes are becoming more prevalent in Florida, especially where populations are growing. Discuss how sinkholes form, and explain what might account for the observed increase in Florida

Sinkholes can form when a cave roof collapses, and this is likely what is occurring in Florida. As population grows and structures are erected, this puts greater pressure on the underlying rocks. If this pressure exceeds rock strength, the rock can collapse to form a sinkhole.

Alternately, sinkholes can form over longer time periods when seeping water and groundwater dissolve soluble rock and carry away soil.
