Define battered child syndrome and explain how officers can recognize abuse

What will be an ideal response?

• It is defined as the collection of injuries sustained by a child as a result of repeated mistreatment or beating. Officers can identify several signs of abuse while assessing the situation. For example, if the child has an injury that is inconsistent with the explanation given by the parents, abuse might have occurred. Other injuries can also be good indicators of child abuse (e.g., cigarette burns, bruises, cuts that appear to be nonaccidental in origin). In addition, abused children sometimes have bite marks appearing on the abdomen, scrotum, and buttock. The officer can also look for injuries in different stages of healing or complications stemming from old injuries that are not explained sufficiently by the parents.
