What can we learn about gender from the examples and symptoms of Turner syndrome?
What will be an ideal response?
Turner syndrome is an example of aneuploidy characterized by only one X chromosome.
Anatomically, women born with this condition are shorter and have a partially webbed neck, attenuated secondary sexual features, in-turned elbows, delayed puberty, and a high waist-to-hip ratio. Cognitively, these girls demonstrate deficiencies in all tasks that are typically better performed by women. They have lower verbal IQ, affect recognition, and attention span. However, they perform better than other women at tasks in which males typically excel. Also, they tend to have a female version of Asperger’s syndrome, which is correlated with highly elevated levels of testosterone in the fetal brain. This clinical picture suggests that women with Turner’s syndrome express these symptoms (cognition more similar to that of males than females) due to a reduction in estrogen.
