Both the Paris Accord and Kyoto Protocol were globally organized attempts to
bring many, if not all, countries into an effort to reduce, and even reverse, the impact of
human development on climate change. The Kyoto Protocol came first and assigned
relatively strong GHG reduction targets to developed countries to try to bring total global
emission to below 1990 levels. This agreement was not binding on developing nations,
which was part of the reason the United States did not sign. The Paris Accord sought to
improve on these mistakes by assigning targets to all countries and making them
binding even on developing countries like China and India, and as a result, even more
nations (including the United States) ratified it.
