The epidermal dendritic cells act as antigen presenting cells (APC), they present part of the pathogens (fragments of pathogens called epitopes) to other immune system cells to trigger an immune response to an infection. The melanocytes produce melanin in response to exposure to cell damaging, ultraviolet light. UV light is converted to heat when it strikes melanin pigment. Unlike UV light, heat will not damage the cells particularly the DNA within the nucleus of the skin's cells.
