Answers will vary, but students should be able to demonstrate knowledge that the Franks did not succeed in establishing a Roman-type rule. Instead, Frankish kings and their military alliances sought to conquer and rule in a world absent of centralized power. Therefore, control over territory was concentrated in the hands of powerful warlords, who passed their lands onto their kin: at least in theory. Violence within families was common, as brother executed brother in order to increase his own wealth; the rule of primogeniture had not yet taken hold. Warfare was constant throughout the sixth, seventh, and eighth centuries as a result.
