You are meeting a new client today. Teresa is a 17-year-old girl of Mexican de-scent. She was born in Mexico, but has been raised in the United States since she was 2 years old. She has made an appointment to see you because she has re-cently discovered that she is pregnant by her African American boyfriend, whom her family forbade her to see, but she continued dating in secret. She has not told

her family of her pregnancy, and is looking for guidance on what to do. De-scribe how you would prepare for this session, and what NASW cultural compe-tence standards would be critical to apply in order to effectively help Teresa.

What will be an ideal response?

Model Response: Should identify four groups of theories—psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, and post-modern. The application of theory to client problems should show an alignment of social worker assessment and un-derlying theoretical assumptions. For example if the social worker assesses a cli-ent suffering from performance anxiety to have cognitive distortion related to performance outcomes, then the appropriate theory selection would be cognitive-behavioral with a focus on cognitive restructuring. However, if the social worker assesses the performance anxiety to be linked to an overbearing and punitive fa-ther, then psychodynamic theories would be the best fit.
