It is stated in Chapter 14 that "for people, an average of 2.1 children per couple results in zero population growth." Explain why it may take several generations to reach zero population once "people average" 2.1 children

What will be an ideal response?

The best responses should include a discussion of the importance of age structure and birth/death rates in determining population growth. Therefore, if the age structure of a population is such that many women are in prereproductive and/or reproductive years and they averaged 2.1 children the population can grow considerably. The population will also continue to grow if the death rate is decreased (people live longer). It may take several generations to reach zero population growth after a 2.1 child average is reached.
