Explain how students are identified as having an intellectual or developmental disability and the role of the general education teacher in the identification process.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers should explain that children with severe intellectual disabilities are often identified at birth or shortly afterward. General education teachers are typically involved in the identification process if a child is identified during his/her school years. Students will be evaluated, including assessment of intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviors, across settings. Teachers often complete interviews and rating scales and collect student work samples, anecdotal notes, and test scores. Teachers also need to know the procedures at their school, participate in prereferral interventions/RTI, collaborate with others, and document and share observations about student learning and adaptive behaviors.
