Proponents of covenant marriage tend to state that they are seeking to reestablish fundamental

family values and restore the nuclear family.

How workable is this idea for post-industrial
society? What are the trends and forces that might limit covenant marriage?
What will be an ideal response?

Covenant marriage tends to support the husband/father as head of the household and key wage
earner, with the wife/mother performing major family support roles. However, the major trend of
women/wives entering the workforce and working outside the home empowers women in the
marriage/family relationship, and requires men to share in performing family support roles. Most
scholars believe that the development of equalitarian power within marriage and family is forcing
families to change in structure and relationships, and limits the extent to which families can
effectively maintain the covenant marriage.
There has also been a major change in personal values toward family relationships in recent
decades supporting a "me-centered" or a central focus upon self-actualization in personal
relationships. Covenant marriage stresses commitment to the relationship over and above self
interests, and requires that persons sacrifice self aggrandizement for the benefit of the family unit.
To what extent will people throughout the whole American society accept the change in values that
covenant marriage requires? Or, is covenant marriage a concept that will work for only certain
types of people?
