Explain the philosophy of pragmatism and its relevance for mixed methods.
What will be an ideal response?
Other researchers turn to a different philosophy to justify the use of mixed methods. Rather than the alternative perspectives of positivism and constructivism, they adopt the principle of pragmatism: “[K]nowledge comes from taking action and learning from the outcomes” (Morgan, 2014, p. 7). In other words, pragmatists believe that the meaning of actions and beliefs is found in their consequences (Morgan, 2014). Pragmatists don’t worry about the nature of reality; instead, they investigate the consequences that follow from taking action in particular situations.
