Describe the functionalists' perspective on the economy and its impact on society.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. Functionalists typically emphasize the benefits of work and the economy. They also see capitalism as bringing prosperity to society as a whole. For functionalists, work is necessary for a society's survival and defining its members' roles. Work is also important because it connects people to each other: As jobs become more specialized, a small group of workers is responsible for getting the work done, and coworkers can get to know one another. Such networks increase workplace solidarity and enhance a sense of belonging to a group where people listen to each other's ideas, interact, and share a vision for the work they do together.
