Summarize the process of gluconeogenesis

Gluconeogenesis is an anabolic process in which new glucose is formed from non-carbohydrates sources. When glycogen supplies are exhausted, the body needs to turn to alternative methods to keep up with the needs of cells that require glucose. The body's main method of doing so is gluconeogenesis, or synthesis of glucose from non-carbohydrate molecules. During gluconeogenesis, the hepatocytes and certain cells of the kidney convert three- and four-carbon compounds into glucose. Sources of these compounds include glycerol, pyruvate, intermediate compounds from the citric acid cycle, and certain amino acids.
