The statement "Memory is reconstructive" means that the human brain is not a video recorder. Biologically, instead of the brain recording and storing an entire memory in one place, it records pieces (sights, sounds, and so forth) and stores them in different areas. Therefore, when I remember something, my brain is piecing together different parts of the experience.
Perhaps because of this biological storage, our brains can misremember details and even entire experiences. The psychologist Frederick Bartlett discovered that research subjects misremembered details in a story he gave them to read. When their memories failed, they substituted similar terms based on their own knowledge and experience--and they didn't always realize they had done so. These unintentional errors can affect us in real life, even in major events such as eyewitness identifications after a crime.
