Communications is critical to supervision as the only way that managers and supervisors get things done is through others. A supervisor must constantly communicate by seeking input, giving direction, listening to what others have to say, and sharing information. Not only do they communicate downward with the employees who work directly for them but they also must communicate upward with their supervisors, managers and executives within an organization. Supervisors are ultimately responsible for completion of tasks by their staff. If supervisors fail to make clear an assignment and it is done incompletely or unsatisfactorily, the supervisors not only have to take more time to correct it but will also be held accountable for the failure to complete it. In corrections, the entire process revolves around people directing people, and communications is the primary instrument to accomplish the correctional mission.
