Your friend is searching for a job, and some openings require applicants to apply online. What strategies can you suggest for connecting with potential employers electronically?
What will be an ideal response?
- Response should reference at least four of the following:
* Proofread your information as carefully and as thoroughly as you can-ask someone who is competent in editing to read it to ensure it is error free.
* Follow instructions on the website. However, you should be careful when providing personal information such as a Social Security number. Unless the site is secure, it is recommended that you do not provide your Social Security number.
* Look at the entire application site before filling out anything to plan what and how you will respond. Make sure you understand how the "submit" options work so that your application information is received.
* Submit separate applications for each individual position in which you have an interest. Update or change your profile as appropriate to fit each position.
* Cover letters may not be requested or allowed on the site, but often there are open text boxes where parts of your cover letter could be included, if appropriate.
* Contact the employer directly about specific openings after submitting electronically to ensure your materials were received.
* Make sure your email account name will add to your credibility.
* Use a meaningful and short subject line and include your name (for example, "Application from Mary Smith regarding your sales representative position").
* Use the format the employer requests and include your résumé in the text or as an attachment.
* Write the email as a formal business letter, using an appropriate greeting.
* If you attach your résumé and cover letter via email, use a standard font such as Times New Roman or Arial. You may want to save your documents in PDF form so they may be easily viewed on a variety of email and web browsers.
