Explain the design of the harmless error rule and the ruling on this topic by the U.S. Supreme Court.
What will be an ideal response?
Harmless error rule is designed to prevent an unnecessary new trial in a situation where correcting the error would not result in a different outcome. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, harmless error rules "serve a very useful purpose insofar as they block setting aside convictions for small errors or defects that have little, if any, likelihood of having changed the result of the trial" (Chapman v. California,1967).
