Describe four important findings that have resulted from research examining metacognition
What will be an ideal response?
First, metacognition plays an essential role in classroom learning, and it can improve cognition without significant increases in work or effort. Second, metacognition depends on task difficulty. When tasks are difficult, the cognitive load on working memory may be too great to allow effective metacognitive monitoring. Third, neither students—including college students—nor adults are particularly good at metacognitive monitoring, but metacognition can be improved significantly by directly teaching and modeling metacognitive skills. And, fourth, metacognition is relatively independent of general academic ability.
