Identify the three fundamental ideas about education that emerged during the War on Poverty. How have these ideas shaped current compensatory programs?
What will be an ideal response?
These ideas include: (1) compensatory experiences initiated in preschool years would lead to successful adjustment to and performance in school, (2) early intellectual growth was directly dependent on the quality of care and type of experiences children were exposed to, and (3) poverty increased risk factors that can adversely affect school success and intellectual growth. These beliefs lead to the creation of Head Start as a comprehensive intervention program aimed at reducing risk factors of poverty to ensure school success for socioeconomically disadvantaged children. Current research also demonstrates that children who participated in early intervention programs did better in all areas of adult life to include higher rates of high school graduation, going to college, owning homes, and lower rates of criminal behaviors, and use of social services. Thus, current programs continue to target low-income families with infants and toddlers to help them succeed right from the beginning of life.
