Regression analysis--a statistical technique for characterizing the pattern of a relationship between two quantitative variables in terms of a linear equation and for summarizing the strength of this relationship in terms of its deviation from the linear pattern; the regression line summarizes the relationship between the independent and the dependent variables (positive, negative, and none; correlation coefficient--a summary statistic that varies from 0 to 1 or ?1, with 0 indicating that the relationship is completely described by the line representing the regression of the dependent variable on the independent variable; a scatterplot shows the location of each case in the data.
