A typical cell in your body uses only about 10 percent of its genes at one time. Why are only a small amount of genes expressed in any given cell?
What will be an ideal response?
All cells in our body have the same DNA, regardless of the cell type. Some of the active genes affect structural features and metabolic pathways common to all of your cells but there are many specialized proteins (and therefore genes) which are only expressed in specialized cell types (for example the protein crystallin in the lens of the eye) within the body.
