What is the focus of medical treatment for clients who have postrenal acute renal failure (ARF)?
a. administering IV fluids, albumin, plasma, or blood
b. increasing the effective arterial blood volume (EABV) with dobutamine or Inocor
c. removing the obstruction
d. restoring perfusion to the kidney quickly
C
Both postrenal ARF and prerenal ARF are reversible if they are identified early and treatment is begun. Undiagnosed postrenal ARF and prerenal ARF lead to intrarenal ARF. Postrenal ARF is caused by an obstruction. An obstruction should be suspected first when a client has an unexplained decrease in urine output or has anuria. Kidney function can be easily restored by removing the obstruction. Obstruction may be caused by renal calculi, blood clots, edema, tumors, urethral strictures, benign prostatic hypertrophy, or pregnancy. Both blood creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) rise when postrenal failure is prolonged.
